Klaipeda is set up this year’s cruise season on Friday, with the number of cruise ship calls expected to fall to 44, a third less than last year, due to the geopolitical situation in the region and rising travel prices, Romena Savickiene, director of the port city’s tourism and culture information center, said on Tuesday. The Baltic region has seen a sharp decline in the number of port calls as a result of US cruise lines pulling itineraries due to the conflict in Ukraine, but port officials were reminding industry figures assembled at a cocktail reception at the Seatrade Cruise Global Convention in Fort Lauderdale that there was more to the region than just the port of St. Petersburg, Russia.
