Seabourn is returning to Istanbul, Turkey, in October 2020 aboard the line’s newest ship, Seabourn Ovation. The 300-suite ship – all with verandas – will sail four seven-day eastern Mediterranean voyages between Istanbul and Athens, Greece, or Athens to Istanbul exploring the iconic Greek Isles and richly historic cities in Turkey. As Turkey continues its efforts to reinvigorate cruise tourism and is carrying out works to eliminate the lack of ports, particularly in Istanbul, the cruise operators adding Istanbul to their routes once again stress that the completion of both the Galataport and Yenikapı port will make the city a vital destination in cruise tourism, which is reported to have an annual turnover of $35 billion. Currently under construction, Istanbul’s mega port project Galataport is expected to revive the city’s cruise tourism. The Culture and Tourism Ministry forecast that the port will host around 500 cruise ships with an average of 4,000 passengers each, likely reaching 2 million people, but with staff and crew of the ships, it is expected to be even higher. Cruise lines are starting to plug Turkey back into their itineraries for 2020 and 2021 in hopes that the country’s troubles are finally behind it. The handful of lines that were already operating there in 2018 are being joined by names such as Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Princess Cruises, Seabourn and Holland America Line.
