Italian cruise liner Costa Cruises will launch new trips linking Sanya, a coastal city in south China’s Hainan Province to tourist destinations in Vietnam and the Philippines in January 2020, the company said Monday. The Costa cruise liner will depart from Sanya on Jan. 4 and carry passengers from Sanya to cities including Da Nang, Ha Long Bay, Nha Trang in Vietnam and Manila and Subic in the Philippines. The main cruise ship operators in French waters have agreed on measures to limit pollution caused by their vessels, including hooking up to the power grid instead of keeping their engines running during stopovers. The “Blue Charter” agreement signed in Marseille by Costa Cruises, MSC Cruises, Royal Carribean Cruises and Ponant also pledged to use less-polluting fuel when maneuvering in harbors as well as other measures to reduce emissions. Working to reduce capacity growth in Southern Europe, five ships will leave the Costa Cruises fleet by May 2021, according to Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation, speaking on the company’s third quarter earnings call on Thursday, Sept. 26. Costa Cruises has signed the “Genoa Blue Agreement” promoted by the Genoa and Savona Coast Guard Offices. The document requires ships to use marine gasoil with a sulfur content not exceeding 0.10% by mass before entering the ports of Savona and Genoa, and not only while the ship is moored as required by current legislation.
