The holding of the Cruise Europe Conference in Stockholm highlighted just one of the capital cities that has, up until recently, been overshadowed by what has been the marquee destination of St Petersburg on Baltic itineraries. 
On Sunday morning, August 8, MV Artania of the German travel agency and cruise ship operator Phoenix Reisen, arrived at the port of Riga. MV Artania is the first cruise ship to call Riga after a break of almost a year and a half caused by the global Covid-19 pandemic.
The development of the cruise sector is also set in the development vision of the Freeport of Riga for the upcoming decade as one of the crucial directions. The goal is to almost double the number of cruise ships and their passengers, making Riga an important cruise and passenger ferry port in the Baltic Sea Region.
The Green Cruise Port – Sustainable Development of Cruise Port Locations project completed an action plan for Baltic Sea cruise ports including options for the Latvian port of Riga. (maritime-executive.com)
