This year’s winners were announced at the 17th annual Readers Choice Awards Gala at the Conrad New York on Dec. 12. Airlines, cruise lines, hotels and more competed in a total of 79 categories this year. Port Tampa Bay is one of the best places to cruise out of in the world, according to the number of passengers it sees. There were nearly 600,000 cruise line embarkations at the Tampa port last year, based on a biennial study from Cruise Lines International Association. Norwegian Encore, Scenic Eclipse and AmaMagna took top honors as the best new cruise ships of 2019 in Cruise Critic’s 12th annual Editors’ Picks Awards. The awards — divided by ocean, luxury and river cruising — are selected by Cruise Critic’s team of international editors for a variety of categories, including best dining, best cabins and best for families. River cruises and luxury cruises are judged separately.

Business Travel News is in receipt of Douglas Ward’s enormous tome Berlitz Cruising and Cruise Ships, now in its 35th year. It is 760 pages of small, but readable print. Cruising and Cruise Ships 2020 is up to the normal very high standard, but not perfect. The first week of October marks the beginning of a record breaking summer cruise season, according to the New Zealand Cruise Association. While cruise ships sail from New Zealand ports every month of the year, the first week of October – when the Maasdam and Majestic Princess arrive in Fiordland – marks the beginning of a season which will see more port visits and passengers than ever before.
