Strong gains in Port Canaveral’s cruise business are expected to help boost the port’s overall revenue by 8.5% and profits by 13.1% for the budget year that begins Oct. 1. Port Canaveral commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved a budget for fiscal 2019-20 that projects $118.31 million in revenue, including $89.79 million from cruise operations. Six cruise ships and thousands of passengers sailed into Port Canaveral Thursday, one day after the port reopened after Hurricane Dorian passed through the area. Port Canaveral will be saving millions of dollars on the construction of its new cruise terminal through what officials call “value engineering.” Canaveral Port Authority commissioners this week unanimously approved a series of design changes in the Cruise Terminal 3 project that will rein in the cost of the terminal. At a special meeting on Tuesday, the Canaveral Port Authority Board of Commissioners unanimously approved awarding Merritt Island-based Ivey’s Construction Inc. a $78.98 million contract for the Port’s Cruise Terminal 3 project and a $29.53 million contract for the adjacent 1,800-vehicle parking garage. Waterside construction at Port Canaveral’s new state-of-the-art Cruise Terminal 3 is underway and a new 1,309-foot-long berth is about to take shape with the arrival of the first steel for the bulkhead wall. Intermarine LLC’s Ocean Globe, a 545-foot multi-purpose U.S.-flagged vessel, arrived at the Port this week to discharge 261 steel pipes ranging in length from 110.5 feet to 126 feet. (more…)
