Port Tampa Bay is one of the best places to cruise out of in the world, according to the number of passengers it sees. There were nearly 600,000 cruise line embarkations at the Tampa port last year, based on a biennial study from Cruise Lines International Association. While reports in the consumer media indicate that Cannes, France, has banned certain cruise ships – those burning fuel with more than 0.1 percent sulfur – the reality is less dramatic. A spokesperson for Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) tells Travel Agent that, under current regulations in Europe, ships are already required to switch to fuel with a maximum of 0.1 percent sulfur when in berth for more than two hours, regardless of which port they were in. Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) issued the following statement on the U.S. Government’s new travel restrictions on Cuba: “Today, (June 5, 2019) the United States Government announced the immediate implementation of new regulations prohibiting previously approved cruise line travel to Cuba from the United States. A recent wave of new government regulations regarding travel to Cuba led many to question how cruises to the island nation might be affected. In the three weeks since the April 17 announcement, little clarity has been provided by the U.S. government pertaining to how the policies would (or wouldn’t) affect the cruise industry. Ketchikan’s mayor and city manager accepted a free cruise to Los Angeles, which they said allowed them to continue talks with those in the private sector as Ketchikan looks to expands cruise ship berths.
