MSC Meraviglia has become the largest ship to ever dock in Manhattan, New York City. The cruise ship, with a capacity for 4,488 guests and a gross tonnage of 171,598 GRT, yesterday (Oct.7) arrived in the Big Apple after a trans-Atlantic crossing from Kiel in Germany with calls in Copenhagen, Denmark; Southampton, England; Belfast, Northern Ireland; Reykjavík, Iceland, plus St John and Halifax in Canada. On the 26th September MSC Meraviglia will call in Belfast Harbour for the first time as the ship becomes the largest ship ever by passenger capacity to visit the famous port. A collision on a busy canal in Venice is sparking new calls for banning cruise ships in the area. On Sunday the MSC Opera cruise liner lost control – the massive ship unable to stop. On the dock, people fled as the towering, 13-deck-high vessel, its horn blaring, grinded into a much smaller river boat and a crowded pier. Five people were hurt. Seth Doane reports.
