Hard Coral Cover Declines but Recovery Remains Possible, Landmark Report Finds
The largest global assessment of coral reef condition ever produced by the Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) reveals the scale of the declining coral reef cover worldwide and highlights the importance of science-based conservation and long-term monitoring to help reefs recover and build resilience.
The report, “Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2025”, states a relative decline of 9.5% compared to the baseline average for the period of 1980-2009, with the steepest losses following mass bleaching events driven by marine heatwaves.
These bleaching events are becoming more frequent and intense as the climate warms, leaving reefs with less time to recover between them. The findings reinforce the urgent need to act rapidly to avoid irreversible losses.
