MSC Cruises Renews Investment In Miami Herald Climate Journalism
MSC Cruises announced today the renewal of its partnership with the Miami Herald to fund the publication’s multimedia climate reporting position.
The cruise line began supporting the position in early 2025, with the goal of further connecting the Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald’s digital readers to information about climate change, its impacts on South Florida and actionable solutions.
The continued contribution underscores the cruise line’s dedication to environmental stewardship and to coverage of climate change and sustainability in South Florida and beyond.
Lynn Torrent, President, MSC Cruises North America, said: “In South Florida, climate journalism is not just important, it’s essential. The Miami Herald’s multimedia climate reporting plays a critical role in shaping meaningful dialogue around the environmental topics in our community. At MSC Cruises, environmental stewardship is a core priority for our business, and we are proud to continue supporting this important work as we continue to invest in South Florida. We believe trusted, local journalism has the power to inspire awareness, drive conversation and advance lasting change.”
The announcement comes as MSC Cruises marks one year since the launch of Miami-based MSC World America and the opening of the shore power–enabled MSC Miami Cruise Terminal. In its first year, the state-of-the-art terminal welcomed 273 ship calls, completed 60 successful shore power connections, and processed 2.5 million guests.
Alex Mena, Executive Editor, Miami Herald & El Nuevo Herald, said: “MSC Cruises’ generous support reinforces the importance of sustained, high-quality climate reporting in a region as vulnerable as ours. This contribution allows us to continue producing journalism that informs and engages our community on an issue that will shape South Florida for generations.”
In tandem, MSC Cruises continues to advance its ongoing commitment to sustainability. This May, MSC Cruises will begin sailing 7-night Alaska itineraries from Seattle. During the inaugural season, the cruise line will partner with marine conservation organization ORCA to host a marine mammal expert onboard for research, crew training and guest education.
Last year, the MSC Foundation opened the Marine Conservation Center at Ocean Cay, and the cruise line recently announced plans for its second private island in the Bahamas, Sandy Cay, built on the same ethos that defines Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, connecting guests to nature and the natural beauty of the ocean.
MSC Cruises is advancing its journey toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its marine operations by 2050 through continued investment in innovative technologies and ship design, renewable fuels, and enhanced operational efficiency.
