Carnival Corporation Powers Sustainability with New Solar Parks at Mahogany Bay and Puerta Maya

Carnival Corporation & plc (logo)Carnival Corporation & plc today announced it has expanded its renewable energy portfolio with the recent launch of new solar parks at two of its port destinations, Mahogany Bay Cruise Center in Roatán, Honduras, and Puerta Maya in Cozumel, Mexico.

These solar installations mark a significant step forward in integrating renewable energy solutions across Carnival Corporation’s global port operations, reinforcing the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact while supporting the long-term sustainability of its destinations.

At Mahogany Bay, the solar park – composed of over 400 high-efficiency solar panels – is expected to supply 60-70% of the port’s total energy needs. Meanwhile, at Puerta Maya, the newly installed solar panels will provide renewable energy to power the terminal facilities (not including private businesses), helping reduce reliance on conventional electricity and contributing to Cozumel’s broader sustainability efforts.

These initiatives build on the company’s two successful solar projects unveiled last year, including at its Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic and at two of its Port of Barcelona cruise terminals, Palacruceros (Terminal D) and Helix Cruise Center (Terminal E). Together, these projects reflect Carnival Corporation’s growing portfolio of renewable energy solutions, as part of its global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its global operations.

“Our investments in solar energy are a testament to our commitment to embedding sustainability into our operations, while also creating meaningful benefits for the communities where we operate,” said Juan Fernandez, Vice President, Destination Operations, Carnival Corporation. “We are focused not only on delivering unforgettable vacation experiences for our guests but also on making a lasting, positive impact in our destinations, preserving the natural beauty and charm that makes them so unique. These efforts extend beyond environmental initiatives to our support for local businesses, job creation, and to fostering long-term economic growth.”

“This investment in renewable energy not only strengthens the environmental sustainability of Mahogany Bay but also reinforces Roatán’s position as a leading eco-conscious destination,” said Ron McNab, Mayor of Roatán.

Nestled in Roatán, Honduras, Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a key gateway to the island’s rich culture, pristine beaches and diverse marine ecosystems. Since opening in 2009, it has played a vital role in shaping Roatán’s tourism industry, welcoming millions of visitors and generating substantial economic benefits for the region.

The port directly supports local jobs, strengthens partnerships with businesses and contributes to long-term community development. In March 2024, Mahogany Bay received the prestigious Blue Flag 5-Star certification, making it the only beach in Honduras to earn this internationally recognized distinction for environmental responsibility.

Located along Cozumel’s stunning southwestern coast, Puerta Maya has played a key role in supporting the island’s culture, tourism and economic growth for more than 20 years. Opened in 1997, the port features three berths and is expected to welcome over 1.8 million guests in 2025 from Carnival Corporation cruise lines, representing nearly 43% of all cruise guest visits in Cozumel.

The port supports approximately 100 direct jobs and benefits an estimated 1,200 indirect jobs, including tour operators, shop owners, food and beverage vendors, and taxi drivers that support our terminal operations, driving long-term economic prosperity in the region.

Across its eight leading ports and destinations, Carnival Corporation actively promotes sustainability through programs and initiatives focused on environmental stewardship, proper waste management and reduction, and sustainable tourism while supporting education, family well-being and youth development programs that strengthen the local community. This includes community-led coastal cleanups and reforestation and conservation efforts such as tree-planting initiatives and coral reef conservation programs aimed at preserving the destinations’ natural beauty and vital marine ecosystems. The company also continues to prioritize solutions to minimize waste, including composting, recycling and water-saving initiatives, in addition to its energy efficiency upgrades.

Collectively, these programs reinforce the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability leadership and to empowering the communities connected to its operations, setting a new benchmark for sustainable port management while creating long-term value for the destinations it serves.
