South Africa at centre of international response to cruise ship virus outbreak

South African health authorities have become central to the international response to the hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius, as officials work alongside the World Health Organization (WHO) and overseas agencies to contain the spread of the rare virus.

The outbreak, which has now resulted in multiple confirmed infections and three deaths, has drawn South Africa into a complex multinational contact-tracing and medical response after several passengers were evacuated to the country for treatment.
