Some Galveston businesses worry cruise ship activity may hurt

Haunted Mayfield Manor and Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast have been fixtures on Galveston’s Strand for years.

Neighbors in the historic—and supposedly haunted—Butterowe building, which served as a temporary morgue after the catastrophic 1900 hurricane, the former is a straight-up haunted house. Next door is more of a museum with a healthy dollop of Jean Lafitte lore.

While these attractions of around 15 years old may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it’s impossible to argue that they don’t belong in a town where so much of the economy is supported by tourism.

But Craig Corbell, who has owned them for the past four years, has seen attendance decline at both for the better part of the past year and will close them down Sept. 9
