Significantly more cruise vessels visit Port of Roenne, Denmark, in the Baltic Sea

The cruise season of the Port of Roenne has just ended and figures show a significant growth in the number of cruise lines visiting the Port in 2018 compared to last year. According to the Port the trend continues.

In 2019, the port estimates a growth in the number of cruise passengers of about 50 percent.

The shipping companies have taken a closer look at what the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic sea has to offer as a cruise destination. This is, according to Port of Roenne, clearly felt, because of the significant increase in the number of calls and passengers seen in relation to the previous three years:

“Last year we had 26 cruise calls and about 12.500 guests. This year we land on 42 calls and approximately 19.000 guests – a significant improvement,” says Niels Lundberg, who works as Cruise Manager at Port of Roenne.

Right now, the Port is in the process of a port expansion, which enables far better conditions for receiving the very large cruise vessels on the market – and even already from next summer.

At the 1’st of June 2019, the new built 300 meter multipurpose quay is ready to receive ships up to 350 meters in length. This means that the harbor here will have the volume to receive far more and larger cruise vessels, which puts its distinctive mark on the estimate for next year’s cruise season at the port:

“We have just announced our expected call-list for 2019. Here we estimate a total of 46 cruise vessels and approximately 30.000 guests. Estimated figures indicate that we expect the same number of calls as this year, but significantly larger vessels. Therefore we expect an increased number of guests,” says Niels Lundberg.

Thomas Bendtsen, CEO at Port of Roenne, looks at the trend with great optimism:

“We are pleased to see the positive development that the harbor is undergoing. When we build a new port that provides better maneuverability for the large vessels and increases the water depth to 11 meters and builds a 1.160 meter long breakwater, it is in order to provide a good service to our customers. The cruise sector is a growing market, and I am therefore pleased to see that growth now also seems to have an effect on Bornholm, our Port and all the unique attractions the island has to offer, “ he says.
