Sea cruises are being rated ever higher on the tourism scale in Schleswig-Holstein. This year, more than 2 .1 million sea travellers are expected in Kiel and 600.000 of them – or 17 % more than last year – will be cruise ship passengers. Last year Kiel was visited on 143 separate occasions (147 in 2016) by 29 different cruise ships with a total gross tonnage of more than 10 million – an increase of 7.5 % over the previous year. For the first time ever more than half a million travellers boarded or left cruise ships in 2017 – 513,500 to be exact, an increase of 6 %. (more…)

Kiel is expecting a quadruple climax to its cruise shipping season on Saturday, August 12th, when four cruise ships will arrive in the port at the same time, in addition to the Baltic ferries of Color Line, Stena Line and DFDS. In the wake of the “AIDAvita” and “AIDAluna”, the “MSC Fantasia” and the “Zuiderdam“ of Holland America Line will berth on Saturday morning. (more…)

The Kieler Woche sailing regatta – the biggest maritime folk festival and sail sport event in northern Europe – is a big draw for cruise ships as well as many other vessels. Between the 17th and the 25th of June Kiel expects visits by a total of fifteen different luxury liners.

This year’s cruise shipping season opens in Kiel on April 9th with a call by “AIDAcara”. Up to the middle of October 28 different cruise ships will berth in the port a total of 142 times while up to half a million passengers are expected to go ashore or embark. (more…)

Almost 2.1 million travellers were recorded on passenger services – an increase of 3.4 % over the previous year. All the ferry operators reported growth with Color Line posting the highest number of passengers. In the cruise shipping sector Kiel can look back on its most successful cruise shipping season ever with record results in the numbers of ship calls, passenger totals and overall tonnage.

This year’s cruise shipping season ended in Kiel on Saturday (October 8th) with a call by the “AIDAvita”. Overall, the port of Kiel was visited 147 times this year by 26 different cruise ships of more than 9.3 million GT, compared to 133 cruise ship visits in 2015. (more…)

Kiel is today (Saturday, 13th Aug.) celebrating the arrival of its 2,500th cruise ship visitor Cunard Line’s “Queen Elizabeth”, which berthed this morning to mark the event. (more…)

Holland America Line’s “Zuiderdam” arrived from Stockholm on Saturday morning for her maiden visit to the Port of Kiel. The HAL cruise ship is the first of five to make debut calls to Kiel this season.

In the ferry traffic sector, which is the Port of Kiel’s core business area, the number of loading units handled was just about the same as in the previous twelve months.

A short pre-Christmas cruise is bringing Phoenix Seereisen’s “Albatros” to Kiel a day before the fourth Sunday in Advent. The ship will berth in the early afternoon of Saturday December 19th at the Ostseekai Terminal, which is very close to the city centre. (more…)
