A second handling centre for cruise ship passengers and their luggage is being built at Kiel’s Ostseekai Cruise Shipping Terminal. Artist’s impressions of how the new building will look when complete have been made public for the first time at the ITB Berlin – the world’s leading trade fair for the travel industry. 
The 2017 cruise shipping season ended in Kiel on Saturday, October 21st, with a visit from the “AIDAvita”. This year the port was visited on 143 separate occasions by 29 different cruise ships with a combined total ten million GT.
The “MSC Fantasia” arrived at the Ostseekai from St Petersburg in Russia early on Saturday September 2nd for what is the 350th visit by an MSC cruise ship to the port of Kiel. Marking the anniversary, the ship’s captain, Guiseppe Galano was welcomed to the Schleswig-Holstein state capital by Nicole Claus, who is the Cruise Shipping Director of the Port of Kiel.
The Kieler Woche sailing regatta – the biggest maritime folk festival and sail sport event in northern Europe – is a big draw for cruise ships as well as many other vessels. Between the 17th and the 25th of June Kiel expects visits by a total of fifteen different luxury liners.
The latest newbuilding to join TUI Cruises – “Mein Schiff 6” – has berthed in Kiel for the first time. Kiel is the ship’s first passenger port of call in Germany she has visited since she was handed over just a few days ago in Turku in Finland.
This year’s cruise shipping season opens in Kiel on April 9th with a call by “AIDAcara”. Up to the middle of October 28 different cruise ships will berth in the port a total of 142 times while up to half a million passengers are expected to go ashore or embark.
