From Deck Cadet to Master – Star Clippers’ Newest Captain Shines as Fleet’s Youngest Commanding Officer

Star Clippers (Logo)Star Clippers has announced the promotion of Vadim Novikov to Captain of Star Flyer, marking a major milestone for both the company and one of its most dedicated crew members.

Eleven years after joining the fleet as a deck cadet, the 36-year-old officer becomes the youngest commanding officer in the company’s history. As captain of Star Flyer, Novikov will oversee ship operations and guest experience, ensuring safety, professionalism and the warm hospitality that has become synonymous with the Star Clippers brand.

Captain Novikov’s journey reflects Star Clippers’ long-standing commitment to professional development at sea. His connection to sailing began early, growing up surrounded by tall ships and maritime life while spending time aboard Kruzenshtern, the famed training vessel where his father served as captain. From a young age, life onboard became second nature, setting the foundation for a career dedicated to traditional sailing and seamanship.

After beginning his studies at Kaliningrad Maritime University, Novikov completed practical training at sea, honing the skills that would eventually lead him to Star Clippers.

He first encountered Star Flyer In 2013 while sailing aboard Kruzenshtern. Seeing passengers disembark a fully-rigged tall ship sparked his curiosity and career ambition. Within six months, he joined Star Clippers as a cadet, beginning a steady progression through the ranks that culminated in his new command.

“Tall ships have always felt like home to me,” said Capt. Novikov. “When I first saw Star Flyer, I realized there was a way to combine authentic sailing with guest experiences, and that immediately inspired me to be part of this company.”

The appointment underscores Star Clippers’ focus on mentorship, continuity and excellence at sea. The company has a strong tradition of cultivating talent internally, supporting crew members through long-term maritime careers. Many officers and crew members have spent decades sailing within the fleet, demonstrating an uncommon level of loyalty and passion for the tall-ship experience.

“With Vadim’s dedication, experience and natural leadership, we’re proud to see him take command of Star Flyer,” offered Terri Haas, Vice President Sales & Marketing. “His story reflects the spirit of Star Clippers — where passion for the sea and commitment to excellence creates lifelong careers.”

Star Clippers’ ships combine the romance of traditional sailing with modern comfort, offering guests an opportunity to experience life under sail while visiting smaller, less-traveled ports often inaccessible to larger cruise ships. The fleet’s relaxed atmosphere, open-bridge policy and emphasis on authentic sailing allow guests to connect directly with the crew and the maritime traditions that define life onboard.

Captain Novikov’s promotion represents not only a personal achievement but also a broader commitment by Star Clippers to preserving the traditions of tall-ship sailing while investing in the future of maritime professionals.
