Jarvis, celebrated for retracing Sir Douglas Mawson’s Antarctic story and Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary survival journey, will contribute expert talks, film screenings and on deck interpretation throughout the voyage. His participation reflects Aurora Expeditions’ longstanding commitment to exploration with purpose, conservation storytelling and hands-on learning at sea.

“Douglas Mawson’s legacy is one of courage, scientific curiosity and environmental stewardship,” said Tim Jarvis AM. “To help launch a ship that bears his name, while exploring Tasmania’s remarkable wilderness and marine environments, is a privilege. I look forward to sharing field insights and practical ways we can all contribute to protecting the places we visit.”

Named for Australia’s pioneering geologist and polar explorer, Douglas Mawson MV will carry a maximum of 130 passengers and is designed for small ship adventure with a light footprint and a suite of immersive activities. Its inaugural Tasmania circumnavigation will showcase the state’s wild coastlines, islands and marine reserves, with opportunities for coastal hikes, Zodiac cruises, wildlife encounters and enrichment programming led by Aurora Expeditions’ expert team alongside Jarvis.

“Tim’s connection to Mawson’s legacy, combined with his decades-long conservation work – from 25zero to the Forktree Project – make him an ideal partner for this milestone voyage,” said Michael Heath, CEO, Aurora Expeditions. “Tim brings unparalleled expertise, passion and perspective to our expedition team, and we’re thrilled to have him aboard for Douglas Mawson MV’s first adventure.”

Jarvis is uniquely placed to help mark the launch of Douglas Mawson MV. Having spent years exploring and interpreting the life of Sir Douglas Mawson for global audiences, he has retraced the explorer’s remarkable journeys and brought historic feats into contemporary focus. Beyond his connection to polar history, Jarvis is a passionate environmentalist whose work spans the globe – from 25zero, a project highlighting the rapid disappearance of the world’s tropical glaciers, to the Forktree Project, which is rewilding degraded farmland in South Australia.

His ability to connect scientific issues with practical, on-the-ground solutions has made him a compelling speaker and filmmaker who inspires action and empowers people to contribute to conservation in their own communities.
