MSC World Europa entering Valletta, Malta (Credit: Valletta Cruise Port)Breakdown of the ship “Msc World Europa” about 8 nautical miles off the island of Ponza: the problem, according to the Coast Guard, occurred at 07.25 this morning when the cruise ship sailing from Genoa to Naples with 8,585 people on board (6,496 passengers and 2,089 crew members), reported an electrical problem with the engines.

The situation on board, says the Coast Guard, is calm: weather conditions are favourable and essential services for passengers continue to be ensured by the on-board generators.

Two tugboats have already departed – from the ports of Gioia Tauro and Naples respectively – to assist the cruise ship and subsequently bring it safely to the port of Naples.
