Arctic Search and Rescue (SAR) network established – AECO

The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operator’s (AECO) initiative for a collaborative network and platform between expedition cruise operators and SAR entities in the Arctic has met for the first time.

The Joint Arctic Search and Rescue Arena (JASA) will focus on solving identified SAR-challenges.

JASA is based on an observed need to establish a network that can follow up relevant findings from SAR exercises, and otherwise serve as a platform for sharing experiences and innovations, and create opportunity for new initiatives.

“JASA is a unique voluntary network were effective collaborative measures connected to Arctic Search and Rescue are achievable, since all members share the same goals and vision”, says Frigg Jørgensen, AECO’s executive director.

Since 2016 AECO has collaborated with Arctic SAR entities to enhance safety in Arctic expedition cruise operations. The work has been done through joint exercises, training, workshops, meetings, information exchange, projects, and much more.

This year, the Joint Arctic SAR Event from findings to actions, made it clear that a more systematic and result oriented follow up on findings and areas in need of improvement is necessary. The idea of JASA was born.

Together with partners, such as the Canadian and Icelandic Coast Guard, the Joint Arctic Command and the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Norway, the network will address and act on issues connected to maritime safety and SAR in Arctic expedition cruise operations.

AECO – Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators

The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) is one of the world’s largest cruise organizations representing expedition cruise members with operations in the Arctic.

AECO is dedicated to ensuring that Arctic expedition cruise tourism adds value to AECO‘s geographical area, while prioritizing concerns for the natural environment, cultural preservation, local communities, and safe operations both at sea and on land.

Members of AECO shape the work and focus of the organization by participating in committees and working groups, consultations, meetings and projects. AECO has guidelines, standards and measures that are mandatory for members.
