With these actions, the Port Authority will improve the pedestrian pavements, the traffic flow, parking areas and bus stops in the logistics zone, as well as installing pergolas with solar panels, landscaped areas, and vertical signage. The work is expected to take 4 months once the tenders have been accepted and the projects adjudicated. It has a budget of 700,000 euros before tax.

An adaptable and sustainable wharf

The Port of Tarragona is working with the objective of improving the vessel operations with sustainability as a mainstay of the project. These objectives can be seen in the new Balearics Wharf logistics zone that is currently being put out for tender, as reported in the public announcement issued this week by the TPA.

This project is focused on the adaptation of the 2,200-m2 esplanade of the cruise liner wharf to turn it into an optimal logistics area for the tourist activity it is due to accommodate, as well as improving the infrastructure and services available.

The TPA is working on endowing the whole area with sustainable energy wherever possible, meaning it will benefit from the installation of photovoltaic panels and LED lighting on the pergolas. These pergolas encourage walking areas, taking advantage of solar energy to generate electricity and provide efficient, sustainable LED lighting. The pergolas will be placed in the pedestrian areas and will benefit from solar energy to generate electricity and provide efficient, sustainable LED lighting.

Continuing from the environmental point of view, landscaped areas will be created with Mediterranean species of low water consumption, which, in addition to embellishing the area and being the most environmentally friendly, will contribute to improving the air quality.

The new development plans include the adaptation of the stormwater surface drainage in the parking areas, at crossroads and other relevant areas. This measure will ensure a suitable distribution of the rainwater and avoid problems of water accumulation on the esplanade.

From the point of view of cruise passenger operations, the project includes the construction of pavements for pedestrians, providing safe and convenient routes for visitors to walk through the area and access the passenger terminal safely.

It will also organise the transit of vehicles to the esplanade and guidance for users with the installation of new signage for the parking areas for vehicles, buses, electric vehicles and traffic lanes, with transit routes that will guarantee orderly and safe circulation.

Finally, power lines will be installed for the lighting of the pergolas, energy transfer lines from the solar panels and ground connections to maintain the aesthetics and functionality of the esplanade; all underground for an orderly and safe appearance.

Second quarter of 2024

All these actions will be carried out during the construction of the new cruise terminal. The construction work on the new cruise ship terminal is already well underway with the assistance of Global Ports Holding, the company that holds the concession for the cruise liner operation. The Tarragona Port Authority will adjust the work on the new Balears Wharf logistics zone to make it compatible with the work on the terminal and ensure that it is completed more or less at the same time, in the second quarter of 2024.

Inaugurated in October 2021, the Balears Wharf was built to accommodate up to four of the world’s largest passenger liners simultaneously.
