Women Expeditioners, Pioneer Researchers & Captains: The Empowering Women Explorers of Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic
Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic’s history has been shaped by inspiring women from its start.
In honor of Women’s History Month, the leader of expedition cruises and adventure travel experiences shares some of the stories from the fearless women explorers at Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic who have paved the way in the industry from being one of the world’s foremost killer whale researchers to the brand’s first female captain.
● Dr – Kathryn Sullivan – As a geologist, a former NASA astronaut, and a NOAA scientist, Dr. Sullivan’s storied career has taken her where few women have gone before. Now, Dr. Sullivan travels aboard National Geographic Explorer as a Global Perspectives Guest Speaker, sharing her planetary perspective through fascinating presentations on topics like the New Space Age and the Emerging Arctic.
● Heidi Norling – With a CV filled with a series of firsts, one of Norling’s most notable accomplishments is being the first woman to captain a Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic ship. This past November she was honored to christen the brand-new National Geographic Resolution.
● Dr. Holly Fearnbach – As one of the world’s foremost killer whale researchers, Dr. Fearnbach has worked to support the conservation of cetaceans in U.S. and international waters for more than 20 years. Currently, Dr. Fearnbach is the marine mammal research director of the nonprofit SR3, SeaLife Response, Rehabilitation and Research in the Pacific Northwest. She and her team pioneered the use of drones to dive deep into the impact of changing marine environments on their inhabitants.
● Sarah Culler – While guests are immersed in the adventure, Culler is close at hand recording it all—and doing whatever it takes to not miss a thing. Any moment not spent filming ashore or swiftly running to the ship’s deck, camera in tow, for the latest wildlife sighting, she is back in her cabin hard at work editing. Over the course of one voyage, she produces a stunning voyage video, weeding through hours of footage searching for just the right shots.
