Nearly 8,000 cruise ship passengers sail into Portland Tuesday

Two cruise ships docked in Portland on Tuesday and a third is expected on Wednesday. Passengers will pour into the city, bringing foot traffic similar to a July weekend.

We could call it the three Ls of fall in Maine: lobster, leaf peeping, and lighthouses. That’s what many people walking off the ships want to experience and that’s what businesses say they are happy to provide.

On Tuesday, nearly 8,000 passengers are arriving and on Wednesday another 2,500.

Some Portland businesses are excited to see some summer weekend-like numbers on a Tuesday-lunch shift. Some locals aren’t the biggest fans of the crowds, saying it’s not worth the chaos, but many welcome it, especially after a few tough years.

“If it’s a late afternoon rush, it usually gets pretty wild, especially this time of year when everything slows down. It’s nice to have a nice, extension of the season,” said Kaitlyn Small, with The Porthole Restaurant & Pub.
