Cruise Gate Hamburg relies on UV technology for baggage disinfection at Steinwerder cruise terminal

Cruise Gate Hamburg (Logo)Luggage, disinfected in seconds, without the use of chemicals – this is possible with a novel device for luggage disinfection from Steripower GmbH & Co. KG, which is being used as of this week at the Cruise Center Steinwerder.

Based on the UV technology, the device can disinfect up to 1,200 pieces of luggage within one hour on site in the cruise terminal before the luggage is carried on board.

„Ensuring the best possible hygiene standards for guests, crew and employees in our terminals and aiming at a high level of infection protection is a common aspiration that we share with Steripower GmbH,” says Simone Maraschi, Managing Director of Cruise Gate Hamburg (CGH), operator of the Hamburg cruise terminals.

Since its foundation in 2003, the German company Steripower GmbH & Co. KG has been known particularly for its contactless hand disinfection devices for use in a broad range of public areas. Specifically, for use in the cruise sector, the company has built the first device for disinfecting luggage based on UV technology.

Maraschi: “The Port of Hamburg is one of the first ports in the world to use the device. We are pleased that with this innovative luggage disinfection unit in Steinwerder we can expand our already extensive hygiene concepts and provide even better protection.”

Cruise passengers will be able to benefit from the device during embarkation at the Cruise Center Steinwerder in the following months.

“Decisively improving the hygiene standard in all areas of life and making people safer in their daily routines are our guiding principles in the development of our disinfection products,” explains Arno Ahrens, Sales Director Cruise at Steripower GmbH & Co. KG. He further explains the company’s mission: “Protection against viruses and bacteria has become even more important as a result of the pandemic. We have responded to the increased requests from national and international shipping companies and ports as well as terminal operators in recent months and developed the “Sanitizer for luggage and pallets”, which works based on the UV technology. We are pleased that CGH has decided to co-operate and use our sanitizer at the cruise terminal for the increased protection of guests and crew.”

The most recent award, the Seatrade Cruise Award 2021 in the category “Hygiene Product of the Year” presented at the Seatrade Cruise Global Miami (USA) in September 2021 is a further confirmation of how convincing the device “made in Germany” is, on an international level as well.

The device scored highly for its high quality, dependability, as also for its simple, quick and safe application. The utilization of UV technology destroys a variety of types of bacteria, such as Streptococcus aureus, E. Coli and Lactobacillales, as well as spore-forming bacteria, which up until this point could not be killed with chemical disinfectants; an increased dose of UV radiation eliminates corona- and reno-viruses as well as viruses of the H-classes.
