New: Cruise & ski! Hit the ski slopes on Saga Sapphire’s “Magic of the Northern Lights” cruise

Saga (Logo)Hit the ski slopes on Saga Sapphire’s all-inclusive Magic of the Northern Lights cruise to Norway on February 27, 2019. During a mooring in Narvik, north of the Arctic Circle, guests can join a beginners’ downhill skiing lesson or experienced skiiers can enjoy the more technical runs.

Saga Cruises’ Captain Kim Tanner is a keen skier and has given the slopes a thumbs-up.

He said: “When I was last in Narvik I popped along for an hour or so of really enjoyable skiing.

“It’s a nice little resort, good for beginners with plenty of easy runs, as well as a few red runs for those who are more experienced.

“The staff were all friendly – and helpful with getting skiiers kitted up for a day on the piste.

“Better still, the slopes are only a five-minute drive from the port and offer lovely views over the bay. Those who venture off-piste can even catch a glimpse of the ship in the harbour.”

The 15-night no-fly cruise also features a two-night stay in Alta where there are tours to the best possible points for sightings of the Northern Lights. Away from light pollution, guests can scan the skies for traces of the electrifying natural phenomenon – and keep warm in complimentary Arctic jackets worth £150 each.

Further Arctic adventures include a call to the Polar Wildlife Park which is home to brown bear, lynx, reindeer and Arctic fox while in Andalsnes, a tour to Fokstumyra Nature Reserve at twilight offers a chance to spot the elusive moose.

In Alta, as well as looking for the aurora borealis, there’s snowmobiling, dog-sledding and reindeer sleigh rides led by Norway’s indigenous Sami people.

Further ports of call include Bergen, Tromso and Stavanger.
