In 2004, when the elegant ocean liner first arrived in Hamburg, it started an unprecedented cruise boom in Northern Germany.

It has since been regarded as a maritime icon by the city’s locals and is most warmly welcomed whenever it calls at the port of Hamburg. Yesterday, the Queen Mary 2, Cunard Line’s flagship cruise liner, steered past the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg on its departure – and greeted Hamburg’s new concert hall and landmark with a spectacular three-point turn. The Elbphilharmonie and the Queen Mary 2 – an image that represents Hamburg’s maritime character like no other.

At the same time, this encounter provides a foretaste of the upcoming Hamburg Cruise Days, the cruise industry’s largest public event in Europe. From 8 to 10 September 2017, a total of 10 ocean liners will be transforming Hamburg’s port into one big stage. Taking place for the sixth time, the event will highlight Hamburg’s reputation as the world’s number one in the area of maritime entertainment and cruise events with a grand ship parade on Saturday night.
