In August 2004, Merrian Carver, a 40-year-old mother of one from Massachusetts, boarded a ship with Celebrity Cruises that sailed from Seattle to Alaska. She chose to travel alone while her daughter stayed with her ex-husband in England. She never made it home. (marketwatch.com)
