Port of Turku, Finland – new environmental investments
Port of Turku continues to be active in environmental matters. Two new waste water sewers for passenger and cargo vessels in two different port locations will be completed by the end of November 2016. This will ensure sufficient reception capacity of waste water from all vessels calling Turku.
The Port of Turku will also provide on-shore power supply for vessels in one berth area by the end of 2016. The Port has signed together with the ports of Stockholm, Helsinki and Tallinn a Memorandum of Understanding on development, cooperation and continuation of initiatives towards a more sound environment at the Baltic Ports annual conference on 9th September in Helsinki. One initiative the ports agreed to work on together was specifically on-shore power supply for vessels.
In 2016 Turku had eight international cruise calls, m/s Albatros and National Geographic Orion calling for the first time. Turku is ideal for cruise vessels max 230 metres in length.
The port has plenty of space with six berths available for cruise vessels and one dedicated for cruise vessels max 170 metres. The port is only 3 km from the city centre and many main sights are within walking distance such as the medieval Turku castle and the maritime museum Forum Marinum.
Turku’s compact size makes it ideal for cruise visitors to make the most of their stay in Turku. There is a free shuttle bus service between the port and city centre during the cruise vessel’s call. Also, the vessels can discharge their waste water in the port free of charge.
