Rotterdam Welcomes Newbuildings

Holland America Line's Koningsdam (Courtesy Fincantieri)Holland America Line’s newbuilding Koningsdam registered in The Netherlands will dock at Cruise Terminal Rotterdam (CTR) with its characteristic arches for her official inauguration on May 20.

On May 5, AIDA Cruises newbuilding AIDAprima will make her first call on a yearly cycle and, on May 24, newbuilding Royal Caribbean International’s Harmony of the Seas calls.

CTR was reopened in July 2015 following a makeover during a cooperation project between the municipality of Rotterdam and Port of Rotterdam.

In addition to aesthetic improvements, the most significant changes involved the steel wall frames, roof insulation, expanded indoor luggage space, new passenger bridge, self-smoothing screeds and additional luggage space at the quay with a terrace on top.

One major focus area has been the modernisation of the monumental facade. Activities were not discontinued during renovation. On cruise days, however, performing work was impossible because then the construction site would be the ‘property’ of customs.
