Take a month out in the Caribbean on Saga Cruises’ Saga Pearl II
Saga passengers can enjoy a month on Saga Pearl II as she sails into the glorious Caribbean sunshine from Southampton during the new all-inclusive Treasures of the Caribbean cruise which departs on January 28, 2017.
Sun-kissed islands include St Maarten, where passengers will have the option to go deep sea fishing to catch sailfish and marlin.
Passengers will arrive by tender on St Kitts and Nevis. Charlestown, the capital of Nevis, is one of the Caribbean’s best-preserved old towns and is noted for the Museum of Nevis History with African artefacts imported by slaves and a gallery devoted to Horatio Nelson who married Frances Nisbet on Nevis in 1787.
In Trinidad, home of the carnival and steel bands, tours will include watching the sky turn red when hundreds of Scarlet Ibis fly in to roost at the Caroni Swamp and Bird Sanctuary. Like clockwork every evening, the birds cover the mangroves where guests on a flat-bottomed boat watch the spectacle, as well as looking for osprey, iguanas and caiman.
At the Tobago Cocoa Estate, chocoholics will be able to see how the precious commodity is grown for export to chocolate makers all over the world. A visit to the 175ft Argyle Waterfalls and a swim in a refreshing natural pool will round off a memorable day.
Saga Pearl II will sail on to Grenada, the most southerly of the Windward Islands, which boasts stunning beaches and lush rainforests. There will also be a tour to colonial Sunnyside Gardens, where 150-year-old mahogany trees surround the 1920s house which has views spectacular coastal views.
In Barbados, passengers will have the option to snorkel over coral reefs and swim with Hawksbill turtles before arriving at a sheltered bay for lunch on board their catamaran.
Christopher Columbus sailed in to Martinique in 1508 and declared it ‘the most beautiful country in the world’. When guests arrive in the capital Fort de France they will be able to jump into an air-conditioned all-terrain vehicle to explore the island, driving by banana and sugar-cane fields and into a tropical rainforest.
To visit Little Bay, in Montserrat, guests will take a tender from the ship. Much of the island is returning to normal after the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano in 1995. Tours to the north will highlight the stunning scenery while a visit to the Restricted Area of Plymouth will be a more sobering sight; the former capital now lies under a layer of ash, in some places up to 18ft deep, with only the tops of buildings visible above the ash.
From Road Town, Tortola, an optional flight on a five or seven-seater fixed wing plane will give guests a 30-minute bird’s eye view of the beautiful British Virgin Islands. The pilot will narrate as he flies over the islands and reveals Saga Pearl II far below.
Further ports of call include Praia da Vitoria and Ponta Delgada in the Azores and Ferrol in Spain.
