A record year for the Port of Reykjavík

The 2014 cruise season broke yet another record for the Port of Reykjavik, Iceland, with 91 cruise calls, compared with 80 calls in the previous year.

Never before have so many cruise guests visited the capital of Iceland, since a total of 105,000 guests visited in the 2014 season, compared to 92,000 in 2013, representing an increase of 13.5%.

As in previous years, most of the passengers visiting Reykjavík on cruise ships were Germans, making up 33% of the total. Cruise guests from the UK accounted for 25%, guests from the U.S. 19%, while a mix of other nationalities made up the remaining 23%.

As is the case elsewhere in Europe, the cruise vessels arriving in Reykjavik are getting bigger. This trend manifests itself in the Reykjavik numbers, where the average number of passengers per ship was 1,155 during the 2014 season, compared to a mere 533 in the year 2000. In order to be able to accommodate the larger cruise vessels, the Port of Reykjavik has invested in a new pier where two megaships can be berthed at the same time. The pier has a bus park for 60 buses and a cruise service centre, open to guests and crews.

A total of 106 cruise vessels have booked a berth for the 2015 season in Reykjavik and the total capacity of passengers is 115,000, counting only the lower berths.
